DP-600: Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate
I recently passed the DP-600: Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate exam—Microsoft’s newest analytics-focused certification for the Fabric era. Building on my earlier DP-700 experience, this certification focuses less on data engineering and more on analytics modelling, semantic layer optimisation, governance, and scalable BI delivery.
If you work with Power BI, the Fabric semantic model, DAX, governance, or enterprise reporting, this certification is designed for you.
Why I took the DP-600
With Microsoft Fabric maturing quickly, the Analytics Engineer role sits at the intersection of data engineering, BI development, governance, and performance optimisation.
The DP-600 certification validates skills essential for modern analytics teams:
- Designing semantic models that scale
- Optimising DAX and model performance
- Applying enterprise-grade governance and security
- Implementing best practices for self-service analytics at scale
For me, this certification made sense as the next step after the DP-700. Where DP-700 focuses on pipelines, ingestion, and data engineering patterns, DP-600 shifts the focus into the analytics layer—the part most users actually interact with.
What the exam covers
The exam breaks down into four core areas:
1. Prepare and model data for analysis
- Creating efficient star schema models
- Working with Direct Lake, Import, and DirectQuery
- Relationships, cardinality, and performance considerations
- Modeling strategies for large-scale datasets
2. Develop and manage semantic models
- Creating and optimising measures with DAX
- Understanding calculation groups and common patterns
- Implementing incremental refresh and Real-Time intelligence patterns
- Managing semantic model refresh behaviour and partitions
3. Govern, secure, and monitor analytics solutions
- Row-Level Security (RLS) and Object-Level Security (OLS)
- Sensitivity labels, endorsements, and lineage
- Workspace roles, governance policies, and admin monitoring
- Fabric Items governance and impact analysis
4. Deliver insights and enable self-service analytics
- Designing effective reports with best practices
- Optimising visuals for performance
- Data storytelling and UX principles
- Enabling governed self-service across the organisation
Overall, DP-600 is far more Power BI and governance heavy than DP-700, but with strong Fabric integration throughout—especially around Direct Lake, semantic models, and enterprise lifecycle management.

- Hands-on practice in my Fabric workspace, focusing on:
- Building semantic models from Lakehouses
- Testing Direct Lake vs Import
- Implementing RLS/OLS
- Creating incremental refresh policies
- Troubleshooting performance with Performance Analyzer & DAX Studio
My prep time was shorter than DP-700 because much of the content aligned with my existing Power BI experience.
My experience taking the exam
The exam had around 40–60 questions, combining:
- Multiple choice
- Case studies
- Scenario-based modelling questions
- Questions involving DAX patterns and performance considerations
Some observations:
Model design and performance were heavily tested
Scenarios often asked which relationship type, storage mode, or modelling technique would deliver the best performance or scalability.
Direct Lake is everywhere
You should be confident in:
- When to use Direct Lake
- How caching works
- Limitations compared to Import/DirectQuery
- Behaviour during refresh
DAX was tested but not excessively deep
Expect questions on:
- FILTER / CALCULATE behaviour
- Iterator functions
- Common optimisation patterns
- Calculation groups
Not full-blown complex DAX puzzles—more about selecting the right function or explaining model behaviour.

Workspace governance
Semantic model certification
Lineage and impact analysis

What’s next
Passing the DP-600 feels like a natural milestone in becoming a Fabric-focused analytics professional. Coupled with DP-700, it forms a strong end-to-end understanding of both:
- Data Engineering (DP-700)
- Analytics Engineering (DP-600)
Next, I plan to explore Fabric’s rapidly growing features in:
- Real-Time Intelligence
- Data Activator
- Custom workloads and APIs
- Advanced DAX optimisation
Fabric is evolving quickly, and the DP-600 makes it clear that analytics roles now require a deeper blend of modelling, governance, and platform knowledge than ever before.
